International Webinar Series
“Lung Cancer”4 June 2022
The Centre for Cancer Research and the Centre for Stem Cell Research, FMHS UTAR, successfully organised the International Webinar Series on Lung Cancer on 4 June 2022, 10 AM – 12.30 PM (Malaysia time: GMT +8) via the Zoom meeting platform. Four distinguished speakers were invited to share their knowledge in the research development and clinical management of lung cancer. In addition, a panel of experts were invited to discuss a case presentation on non-small cell invasive adenocarcinoma of the lung. A total of 55 participants (undergraduate & postgraduate students, researchers, specialists, and academic staff) from various institutions and universities participated in a fruitful discussion and Q&A session of the event.

Dr Teoh Hoon Koon, the Organising Chairperson of this webinar, warmly welcomed the participants and thanked all speakers and participants for taking their time to join this webinar. She also expressed her appreciation to the advisors and organising committee members for successfully organising the first international webinar for the year 2022. Dr Teoh expressed hope that this webinar would provide a virtual platform for learning and discussion to generate new ideas and establish new collaboration among the participants. She ended the opening address by wishing all participants a fruitful webinar.
The first speaker was Dr Wang Mong-Lien, from the Taipei Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. Dr Wang shared the work done by her group on the oncogenic role of circular RNAs in non-small cell lung cancer via the EGFR signalling pathway.
Following this, Dr Ivan Shew Yee Siang, Consultant Clinical Oncologist at Sunway Medical Centre, shared the experience of his hospital in the clinical management of lung cancer. Dr Ivan talked about the practice in managing late-stage lung cancer patients and shared some of the current and new therapies available in the market
Dr Narasimman Sathiamurthy, a Consultant Thoracic & General Surgeon and Head of Thoracic Surgery Services, Malaysia and Head of Thoracic Unit, Hospital Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was the last speaker. He shared about the surgical aspects of lung cancer and the training of thoracic surgeons in Malaysia.
A Q&A session followed the talk where each speaker took turns to answer some questions from the participants. The Q&A session was moderated by Dr Lee Bee Sun and Dr Ong Hai Lin.
For the last programme of the webinar, two Year 5 MBBS students from UTAR, Ms Lau Jia Shin and Ms Hou Ruijia presented a case presentation on non-small cell invasive adenocarcinoma of the lung and invited the experts to share their views. Dr Din Xin Jet discussed the radiological aspects of the case while Dr Narasimman and Dr Shew discussed the surgical and clinical management of the case.
